It's taken from the Latin sativus, meaning cultivated or sown.
The International Phonetic Alphabet would write sativus as saˈtiː.wus

sativa, emphasis on the a. Never er. And i should have some knowledge, I studied Latin for a long time..
Sativa, Sativus, and Sativum are Latin botanical adjectives meaning cultivated, used to designate certain seed-grown domestic crops. Sativa (ending in -a) is the feminine form of the adjective, but masculine (-us) and neuter (-um) endings are also used to agree with the gender of the nouns they modify.

I did it for two years, but they were a long time ago and I've forgotten most of it apart from the basics.
Salve mater,
amo, amas, amat, ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
I used to hate it at school but now it is quite invaluable in truely understanding the English language. Often if I dont know a word I can understand either its latin counterpart or the construction in order to get to the correct meaning. As a keen gardener I go out of my way to learn the Latin nomenclature. It really can be so useful in horticulture.
