A friend is gonna be doing a grow room shortly, and has 3 options

Option 1 - His house loft.

Option 2 -  his large shed

Option 3 - brick built garage.

As far as i can see there are issues with all of them. This is what i came up with from the top of my head.

Loft-

Plus points

Its inside his house, so no nosey neighbours wondering why hes spending gso much time in the garage/ shed

Electric supply is already there, but limited. More sockets will be required

Water within relatively easy reach

Ventilation will be straightforward

Negative points.

Hot in summer, cold in winter

Not much head height, the trusses come to a point in the middle oof the roof They are W shaped, so limited headroom

Will have to somehow sheet it out to try and insulate it. loft hatch is only about 600 square, so cant pull up sheets of plasterboard etc.

Climbing up and down ladder as he has arthritus in his knees -no pain -no weed

Large shed. Its timber studs and lining boards with a single pitch steel roof

Plus points

Water reasonably close

Large area to grow in

Negative points

No electric, so supply will be required

Insulation and wall liniing with sheets of plywood/ plasterboardwill also be required

Hot in summer, cold in winter, but this may not be the case if its insulated, i dont know never grown outside.

Can be seen from approx 4 houses.

heat signature

Noise of fans maybe?

Garage Its concrete block with a double pitched slate roof

Plus points

Most secure

Least difference between summer and winter temps

No heat signature

electric is there already

Water nearby

Negative points

Wont be able to open main garage door (its onto the street)

Walls will have to be insulated  studded and sheeted.

One side of garage borders next doors garden, and it has wall vents in tat side - noise

Cant think of anything else to add, but he wants to know if there is anything else to consider.

What do you recommend given the problems etc?

Since ive never grown in sheds, garages etc, maybe you can come up with other possible problems or issues

Stealth is of paramount importance,

Let me know your thoughts

Loft is safest but shite in the summer and coldest depths of winter :(

Brick Garage would be my choice, esp if lined out properly. Vents can be blocked up and new ones put in for intake/out-take. Biggest worry would be the smell if fans/filters/ducting failed and possibility of burglars/crop-robbers.? Has it got a side door or just the front doors?

You could easily block off the garage grow bit so garage door could be opened if its plenty big in there, and I would make a room inside a room anyway if there were any chances of neighbours noticing anything, I like the sound of that one especially if attic is awkward and not much height.

Yes the garage has a side door, and that was the one i would choose for him. Its just a single car garage, but its currently full of motorbikes - i told him to sell them- he told me to fuck off lol

I suggested to him to do a tent inside 4 stud walls, plasterboarded and taped, to keep the sound down, but hes concerned about fan noise

He was gonna do a 2.4 square tent, with a 8 inch RVK L1 fan and filter combo, but i know myself that these fans are feckin loud.

Maybe two  6 inch ones would be a better bet, or a 12 inch one on a controller, as it would just be ticking over?

What do you reckon? I like the 12 inch option,

Little chance of robbers, given his location, hes in a shit kick village in the middle of no where.

Is there old boiler cupboard?

Nice and small tent 80,80cm square 180 tall you get 200cm tall now, just not big but can get good yields in it nd max i fitted before of smaller plants was 8 but only three or two big plants cn go in, scrog will yield pretty decent.

Never grown anywhere else part from airing cubby so cant help much :(

If he can avoid the loft I would, its a fuckin nightmare year round,im sayin the garage.id make a big thing of moving a washer and dryer in there.then build a secret room out of studwork and plasterboard fully insulated with kingspan.my mates done a very similar thing
With the door behind a metal locker with the back cut off.You can run pipework in for a rad off the house central heatin aswell save a fortune on oil rads come winter.

I'd go for garage. I'd build a partiton wall, then cover the inside with 50mm ecotherm and put a tent inside that, and use a variac controller for noise, sorted.

Yeah, im beginning to think the garage is the best bet to be honest.

WAs thinking about 2*2 stud wall,(minimum) insulated, with accoustic plasterboard on the inside, alll joints taped/ plastered.  OSB on the outside.probably the 11mm stuff

Will look into the ecotherm stuff Denots, hopefully its cheaper than kingspan or celotex.

I seem to remember Forest saying something about the kingspan being worse than slab rockwool for noise etc, but could be wroing.?

Would have the tent inside this room, and vent out of the top of the room to the garage eaves/soffit board vents

Noise is the only concern really.

The keywords for effective soundproofing are mass and decoupling, so look for dense/heavy materials and mount them on resilient supports.

These fans are fairly quiet, albeit quite pricey:

Soler & Palau TD Silent

The loudest part will probably be duct-borne noise from the exit vent though.

Oh, and I'd probably go for the garage as well :)
