i assume distillation equipment is not cheap, and not really 'home-madeable' without the proper tools, right ?
i mean - building a simmering pot, and attach to it all the lids and the tubing, is not something you can carve out of a piece of wood,
so basically - home distillation just wont be possible, right ?

It certainly is possible, and the pressure cooker idea is a fair start, but it's potentially dangerous (fire and explosion), and ensuring that what's produced is pure ethanol will require care and attention to detail.

You really want a fractioning column (a long, vertical tube with packing material) to get the correct product (fraction), and combining one of those with a reflux still will produce the purest solvent.

ETA: I'd recommend isopropanol if you can get it. But if you can't, then acetone will work just as well and may be easier to find.

Food for thought? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161446510363

It certainly gives some idea of what one might be aiming for when building a reflux still.

I'll stay outta this one ;)  but as missy says, for 95% you will need a reflux still, not and easy process and experience is everything because what comes out is far more toxic than ISO if you catch it wrong. I've used several solvents and the only difference seems to be potency of the oil, done right.

As a reclaim it should work a treat. I use the megahome jobby, it's a bit hit n miss on what you get back though, the seal is only designed for lower proof so it leaks like fuck later on. I ended up buying a couple of spare seals for a quick change over and get running again.

You do like a project eh Duke, please let me know how you get on.

To be fair, that's not really a still in the way we're talking as it doesn't separate the various components of the feed mixture (although it may be able to, to some extent). It's more of a condenser, and you may be able to buy something suitable off the shelf for that.

Nice :)

The rest of us might be better off investigating copper tube and lead-free solder though ;)

want to make a tincture instead of oil, so im pretty much MUST use 96% drinking alcohol.

ill probably spend some time reading about home made distilleries and see if i can come up with something and let u guys know.
